Blog #6- A New Technology

While listening to the other presentations, one in particular caught my eye. This was the telegram. Invented by the northwestern union telegram company, it was used to send cross country messages within a day. It was also used for many important events like WWI and the first flight. The peak use was in the 1920s and 1930s.

It was developed in at the 1830's and 1840s by Samuel Morse. Although the telegram had fallen out of widespread use by the start of the 21st century, it laid the groundwork for the communications revolution that led to those later inventions.

There was even an electric telegraph. There were two inventors that helped with the creation of this. Alessandro Volta and Hans Christian Oersted. between these two, the battery was invented and there was a demonstration between electricity and magnetism.

In 1843, Morse and Vail received funding from the U.S Congress to set up and test the telegraph system between Washington D.C and Baltimore, MD. Use of the telegraph was quickly accepted by people eager for a faster and easier was of sending and receiving information.

The electric telegraph transformed how wars were fought and won and how journalists and newspapers conducted business.
